How to read and prepare a baby knitwear size chart

Build a useful baby knitwear measurement chart with defined garment points, units, size labels, tolerances and sample records for a wholesale enquiry.

Baby knitwear and sourcing details from the Mimixiong reference collection

Separate the label from the measurement

A label such as 74, 6–9 months or small does not explain every dimension of a garment. Ask what the supplier’s sizing system refers to and request the chart for the exact style you are considering. Distinguish body measurements from finished garment measurements. The two describe different things, so combining them in one unlabeled column makes comparison difficult. Retain the supplier’s original size reference while you resolve any proposed customer-facing label.

Choose points that describe the garment

For an upper-body garment, useful points may include chest width, garment length, sleeve length and openings. Rompers and trousers need additional points relevant to their construction. For hats and booties, request actual dimensions and an explanation of how they are measured. Ask the supplier to identify each point on a drawing. A list of numbers becomes useful only when both parties understand which part of the product each number describes.

Make the measurement method repeatable

State the unit and whether a width is measured flat or represents a full circumference. Ask how the garment is positioned, whether fasteners are closed and whether the knit is measured relaxed. Record those instructions with the chart. When you receive a sample, use the agreed method before comparing the result with the target. Photograph the tape placement when a point is unclear, and ask for clarification rather than doubling or converting a number by assumption.

Compare the complete size range

Put the proposed sizes in columns and each defined measurement point in a row. Check which sample sizes have actually been reviewed and which values are still a proposed specification. A sample in one size does not verify every other size. Ask how the supplier develops the differences between sizes, and identify any size you want to examine physically. Keep charts for different styles separate, even when they use the same printed size labels.

Agree tolerances and record revisions

Write the target measurement and agreed tolerance as separate fields. Do not introduce one universal tolerance for every point, material or garment. Ask the supplier which variation it proposes and resolve differences before approval. Give each revised chart a date or version identifier, then mark the version associated with the approved sample. If a measurement changes, update the written chart as well as the message thread so the production reference remains unambiguous.

Carry the chart into the order

Send the product link, chart, planned size breakdown and destination with your enquiry. Ask the supplier to confirm which measurements and sizes it can supply, and how any changes affect sampling or minimum quantities. Keep the approved chart, sample record and order terms together. The Mimixiong reference catalog shows source size labels; an enquiry is the place to confirm their meaning and the actual dimensions before an order decision. No general chart replaces that review.

Your enquiry checklist

  • Identify body measurements versus finished garment measurements.
  • Define every measurement point, unit and tape placement.
  • Record sample sizes reviewed and unresolved sizes.
  • Keep the approved chart version and tolerances with the order.
